It was all about staying cool at Roberto Clemente Park in Paterson on Monday. From the splash area to the park benches, people like Deborah Smalley were looking to escape the heat. "Just enjoying the weather is hot, so I’ve been under the tree in the shade…it's too hot to be walking around everywhere," said Smalley. With the hot and humid weather sticking around, the city is providing relief from the heat for its residents through cooling centers.

It's the first time in a week Max the Pitbull has come face-to-face with the people who rescued him after being abandoned at home on May Street in Irvington. Yasmin Rivera is a well-known on-the-ground rescuer. She says she was alerted by someone on July 3 that three pit bulls might be on the abandoned property, but when she arrived, there were five. Some of them were nailed into their kennels without any food or water.

A new bill is being voted on that would upgrade penalties for burglary and in exchange hopefully curtail people - especially juveniles- from becoming repeat offenders. A Sunoco Gas station along Route 3 East in Secaucus is the most recent arrest site for two juveniles charged for a stolen vehicle. Police say the driver, a 15-year-old boy and the passenger, a 16-year-old boy, are repeat offenders with a slew of charges for other crimes.

With a cane in his hand and boot on for a broken foot, it has been a struggle to get around for East Orange resident Maurice Roundtree – and it is not just because of his injury. "I had a doctor’s appointment and come to find out that when I got to the elevator... someone shared with me that the elevator is broken," said Roundtree. This isn't the first time. For the past 10 months, residents who live at The Pavilion apartments have dealt with elevators that are constantly broken.

At the intersection of Montgomery and Washington streets, no matter where you look, every street was blocked off in downtown Jersey City. More than 75 food trucks and vendors lined the streets as vendors look to come out and celebrate the Fourth of July. "We came last year, and it was so much fun, and this year's seems bigger and better because the fireworks are kind over here this year," said Stephanie Norris, of Jersey City.
