    An 81-year-old woman is dead after a fire broke out in her home in Greenwich Village on Wednesday, according to the FDNY. What we know: The fire broke out on the top floor of a townhouse on Waverly Place around 7:20 a.m., the FDNY said. The woman has been identified as 81-year-old Jean Goetz. Goetz lived in her house on Waverly Place for 60 years. Her daughter Natasha said she lives nearby, and her mother raised her in this apartment.

    Police are searching for the suspect responsible for a series of smash-and-grab robberies in New Jersey. What we know: Police said the suspect broke into Chicken and Shawarma on Bloomfield Avenue in Montclair and three other businesses in the township that had their doors smashed between last Friday and Sunday. In that incident, police said the man got away with around $200 from the cash register. On Sunday, police said the suspect struck again at Marcel Bakery and Kitchen.

    New Jersey police officers rescued a pink poodle after a dangerous swim in the Passaic River on Monday afternoon. Timeline: The Garfield Police Department received a call at approximately 4:15 p.m. about a small "pink" poodle named Molly who was running loose near River Drive and Lanza Avenue. Earlier in the day, the Garfield Police Department said Molly's owner contacted them that she had escaped their house.

    Twelve students from a Long Island middle school became sick after being given THC gummies, according to the Suffolk County Police Department. What we know: Suffolk County police said a fellow student at William Floyd Middle School in Moriches gave classmates the edible. Suffolk County Police Seventh Precinct officers responded at approximately 10:10 a.m. to multiple aided cases. Police said 11 of the 12 middle school students were rushed to the hospital for treatment.

    A former Bronx daycare owner has been sentenced to 45 years in prison after a toddler died from ingesting fentanyl in September 2023. In addition to the prison sentence, the U.S. Attorney's Office sentenced the owner, Grei Mendez, to five years of supervised release.
