The Boulder Valley school board took a closer look Tuesday at how school year calendars are created, with a goal of updating its policy to provide more flexibility for future years’ calendars. The school board approves new calendars every two years, with the calendar generally following a similar format of school starting mid-August and ending before Memorial Day. The policy itself was last updated in 2001. “There are a lot of inconsistencies,” school board member Beth Niznik said.

Riley Nuttycombe, a senior at Boulder’s New Vista High School, applied on a whim for an opportunity to experience what it might be like to live on Mars through a NASA-sponsored program called Spaceward Bound. She was chosen out of about 200 applicants to visit the Mars Desert Research Station in Utah, where she was part of the program’s first crew of high school students in 2022.

With longtime Superintendent Don Haddad retiring at the end of the school year, the St. Vrain Valley school board is planning an internal search to find his replacement. The school board voted unanimously at a Wednesday special meeting to start with an internal search, widening the search to include outside candidates only if an internal search doesn’t yield qualified applicants.

St. Vrain Valley Schools is hosting its annual student art show through Sunday at the Boulder County Fairgrounds Exhibition Hall. The free show includes student art from all grade levels and schools. Mediums featured include ceramics, digital art/photography, drawing, jewelry making, metalwork, mixed media, painting and printmaking. Viewing hours are 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. every day through Saturday and 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday. An artists’ night open house is from 5 to 6:30 p.m. Thursday.

Jared Polis helped with a second-grade lesson on quantum technology that included jelly beans, Oreos and Legos during a Monday visit to the Innovation Center of St. Vrain Valley Schools for World Quantum Day. High cost slows Boulder Valley School District electric bus plans

The Boulder Valley School District is keeping its goal of having electric buses make up half its fleet, but grants drying up, plus the uncertainty of possible tariff price increases has the school district moving more slowly in replacing diesel buses with pricier electric models.
