The St. Vrain Valley School District has announced Deputy Superintendent Jackie Kapushion as the sole finalist for superintendent following an internal search. Kapushion, who also was the sole applicant for the position, would replace longtime Superintendent Don Haddad, who is retiring at the end of the school year. She is scheduled to give a presentation to the school board May 28. Following her presentation, the board plans to decide whether to move forward with contract negotiations.

The Boulder County AIDS Project and the Interfaith AIDS Coalition are hosting a candlelight vigil May 18. Participants are invited to arrive at 6 p.m. at the covered porch of Boulder’s First United Methodist Church, located at 1421 Spruce St., Boulder. The program will begin shortly afterward and includes live music, short reflections by Rev. Amy Ostwald and the reading of names of people who lived with HIV who have died.

The Boulder Valley School District authorities sent an email to parents this week after they saw six cases of student laptop fires in the district that appear to be related to a new, viral social media trend. Social media videos are encouraging students to short-circuit their district-issued laptops or puncture their lithium batteries.

The Boulder Valley school board voted unanimously at a special meeting Wednesday to fire a sixth-grade math teacher accused of inappropriately touching students. The vote to dismiss Manhattan Middle School teacher Daniel Greenberg, 56, followed a closed-door session to receive legal advice. Board members didn’t comment before the vote. Superintendent Rob Anderson first recommended Greenberg’s dismissal last month.
