UNIVERSITY PARK, Texas — A Texas school district is considering integrating drones into its active shooter prevention plans. Campus Guardian Angels, an Austin-based startup, recently demonstrated its drone technology at a Highland Park ISD elementary school, Houston Public Media reports. The drones can navigate stairs and hallways, drop pepper spray or flashbangs, or collide with an attacker if necessary, says company CEO Justin Marston.

BUFFALO, N.Y. — Canisius University announced its plan to eliminate its own public safety department and partner with a private security company to handle public safety services. The school has contracted with Alaska-based Nana Management Services (NMS), WKBW reports. Employees of the public safety department, which consists of five sworn peace officers, three dispatchers, and an administrative specialist, received letters last week informing them that they would be terminated as of June 15.

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis on May 21 signed legislation that aims to enhance school safety in Florida public schools. The bipartisan bill (SB 1470), set to take effect July 1, was sponsored in the Senate by Senator Danny Burgess (R-Zephyrhills) and in the House by Rep. Brad Yeager (R-New Port Richey) and State Rep. Christine Hunschofsky (D-Parkland). In part, the legislation builds upon the state’s Guardian Program by expanding participation to childcare centers, Parkland Talk reports.

UVALDE, Texas — A $4.3 million grant has been used to improve radio communications at thirteen school districts within Uvalde, Val Verde, and Kinney counties. On May 24, 2022, 19 children and two teachers were killed in a mass shooting at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde. More than 370 officials from federal, state, and local agencies responded to the shooting yet it took law enforcement officials 77 minutes to take down the gunman.

A federal judge in Massachusetts blocked President Donald Trump’s executive order calling for Secretary Linda McMahon to dismantle the U.S. Department of Education. U.S. District Judge Myong Joun granted a preliminary injunction on Thursday stopping the administration from carrying out plans announced in March that lay the groundwork for its goal of shutting down the department, AP News reports.
