The "After Modernism" exhibit at the Arthur Ross Gallery inside the Fisher Fine Arts Library on Penn's campus is a quick, free show. The landmark Frank Furness building, which houses the gallery, is worth a visit in itself. The exhibit is curated from the collection of Hubert Neumann under the direction of Professor Gwendolyn DuBois Shaw, with assistance from the students in her "The Art of Art Collecting" seminar co-taught with Peter Decherney.

Can charcoal shimmer? In the virtuosic hand of American realist artist John Moore, it can. Especially if you begin with a close-up view, engage with the rough pointillistic texture of his charcoal drawings, then move away and glance back at the work to see something totally different: a shimmering that seems impossible. Moore, 84, is a stalwart of the Philadelphia art scene, spending decades teaching at Temple and Penn, and focusing much of the time on painting images of industrial Coatesville.

CAPE MAY COURT HOUSE — During some weeks in August, the 80-acre Avalon Campground on Route 9 is about half French-speaking Canadians, says general manager Mike Slifer. It’s been that way for generations. “When you’re talking about working class Canadian families that have enough of a budget to go on a nice vacation for the family, this is where they’re going to come,” says Slifer. He’s confident they’ll be back this summer.
