Nearly a year after Whitney Hurd was stabbed to death, her accused killer is behind bars and facing a first-degree murder charge. Channel 9 learned that the suspect, Brandon Braxton, had been arrested multiple times for unrelated crimes after Hurd’s death. It was after one of those arrests that he confessed to killing Hurd, police said in an affidavit obtained by Channel 9 on Friday. Hurd was found dead in her home on Werburgh Street last July, and police said she had been stabbed multiple times.

After Channel 9′s reporting on parents’ concerns at Charlotte Catholic High School, the school announced a leadership change this week. Principal Lori Phillips will be resigning from the school on Friday, according to a letter obtained by Channel 9 on Tuesday. Channel 9′s Evan Donovan has been speaking with parents of students at the school for months, and they’ve brought up issues ranging from bullying to questioning the school’s proposal to change accreditation.

COLUMBIA, S.C. — Susan Smith, the mother convicted of killing her children 30 years ago in South Carolina, appeared before a parole board for the first time on Wednesday. It was Smith’s first hearing after becoming eligible for parole this year. She was convicted of two counts of murder and sentenced to life in prison after killing her children in 1994. The parole board called Smith up at about 11:45 a.m., and she appeared remotely from the Leath Correctional Institution in Greenwood.
