WSOC-TV, also known as channel 9, is a television station located in Charlotte, North Carolina, that has affiliations with ABC and Telemundo. The station is part of the Cox Media Group, which also owns the independent station WAXN-TV (channel 64) licensed in Kannapolis. Both WSOC-TV and WAXN-TV operate from shared studios situated at the intersection of North Tryon and West 23rd streets, just north of downtown Charlotte. The transmitter for WSOC-TV is positioned near Reedy Creek Park in the Newell area of the city.

    CHARLOTTE — The 17th Annual Salute to Heroes hockey game was held at Bojangles Coliseum Saturday afternoon. The event featured the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department, the Charlotte Fire Department, and MEDIC, along with members of the community. This year marked the first game since four officers were killed and four others were hurt in an ambush on Galway Drive in east Charlotte.     MECKLENBURG COUNTY, N.C. — Mecklenburg County Solid Waste & Recycling officials are pleading for people to stop throwing lithium-ion batteries in the trash and recycling bins after four fires broke out in Mecklenburg County recycling centers and landfills this week. Two of the fires happened at the Materials Recovery Facility, also known as the MRF, on Amble Drive. The MRF welcomes 350 tons of recyclables every day, creating several feet deep piles of cardboard boxes, plastic bottles, and more.

    LocalGASTONIA, N.C. — A SWAT situation was underway Friday in Gastonia, Channel 9’s Ken Lemon reports. Lemon was at the scene Friday where officers had swarmed a neighborhood near Barkley and Radio streets. The Gastonia Police Department said SWAT officers were asked to assist in the arrest of a murder suspect, identified as 28-year-old Phillip Lydell out of Staten Island, New York. Police said the murder happened on March 28.
