A couple of recent lawsuit settlements mean budget cuts are coming for the Kansas City, Missouri, Police Department. Ricky Kidd’s federal lawsuit was settled for $14 million. A judge ruled Kidd was wrongfully convicted of a 1996 double homicide. He spent 23 years in prison. Last month, a judge approved a $4.1 million settlement for the family of Cameron Lamb. Former Kansas City Detective Eric DeValkenaere shot and killed Lamb in 2019.

A new ruling may pave the way for a privately owned prison to bring Immigration and Customs Enforcement, or ICE, detainees to its Leavenworth facility more quickly. On Thursday, a judge dismissed a lawsuit brought by the city of Leavenworth against CoreCivic, ruling the case didn’t belong in federal court. City leaders wanted CoreCivic to fill out a special use permit application to house ICE detainees at the facility.

Large pink billboards have been placed in high-traffic areas around downtown Kansas City. Drivers heading east on Interstate 70 out of downtown can see one that reads, “Can a billboard end antisemitism? No. But you’re not a billboard.”The nonprofit group JewBelong has paid for similar billboards across the country. The campaign comes as the Anti-Defamation League, or ADL, reports that harassment, vandalism and assaults targeting Jewish Americans are on the rise.

A federal class action lawsuit has been filed against KDR and Axiom Property Management, the owner and operator of Aspen Place Apartments in Gardner, after about 700 residents were forced to leave their homes within 48 hours earlier this month. The mass displacement came after the city of Gardner condemned the property due to ongoing issues, including persistent water service problems and an incident in which a firetruck became stuck on a damaged access road.
