Cardross and Tarbert Libraries had not been part of Live Argyll’s business plan for the coming years when it was published earlier in 2025. Rosneath Library also did not feature in the document, having been closed since the UK went into lockdown at the start of the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020. However, an Argyll and Bute Council spokesperson this week said that plans for the closure of Cardross and Tarbert were on hold, while discussions were taking place over Rosneath Library’s future.

The authority is forecasting a mid-range budget gap of £9.5 million for the 2026/27 financial year, which is after suggested increases of five per cent in council tax and six per cent in fees and charges. The new approach is entitled ‘Enabling the future of the council to thrive’ and will see the future council budget set out over a five-year forecast. Councillors are recommended to agree the process at the last full council meeting before summer recess on Thursday, June 26.

The authority has been asked for its views on a potential charge for cruise ships as part of the Cruise Ship Levy (Scotland) Bill which is being passed through the Scottish Parliament. However, Councillor Gary Mulvaney (Conservative, Helensburgh Central) raised doubt about the council’s draft response on how funds would be used. Councillor Jim Lynch (SNP, Oban South and the Isles) then expressed agreement with his opposite number.
