POTSDAM — About 400 people protested in downtown Potsdam on Saturday as part of coordinated “No Kings” rallies held throughout the country that day. The date, April 19, was chosen because it’s the 250th anniversary of the battles of Lexington and Concord, which are considered the start of the Revolutionary War. “That’s the time at which we decided we didn’t want kings,” said Ginger Storey-Welch, who led Saturday’s protest.

POTSDAM — The village board has appointed a new summer recreation leader to oversee seasonal programming at Sandstoner Park. This newly created position is separate from the village recreation director role, which was vacated when Trey Smutz resigned on March 20. The decision was made during the board of trustees’ budget workshop held April 8. Although only three members were present, it was enough to meet quorum requirements.

POTSDAM — The Village Board of Trustees voted to unanimously accept former village recreation director Trey Smutz’s resignation at their meeting on April 7. Smutz resigned March 20. State police have reported that they are investigating Smutz, but so far have declined to say anything more. They did not immediately respond to a request asking about the nature of the investigation.

POTSDAM — The village is moving closer to beginning construction on its streetscape renovation and riverwalk trail initiatives, following approval of a $4.68 million bond to finance the initial costs of the work. During its April 7 meeting, the village board of trustees also accepted a contractor’s bid for the construction of a new Brooks Street, which will connect Depot and Raymond streets, and hired a marketing firm to assist with the Downtown Revitalization Initiative.
