MIHS boys soccer scores 3A KingCo tourney title

The atmosphere was electric at Mercer Island High School’s stadium on May 13 during the 3A KingCo tournament boys soccer championship match, according to Islander senior captain Charlie Frink. Down 2-0 to visiting Bellevue High School, the locals fed off their fans’ enthusiasm and tied the game with 10 minutes to go and took the match into extra time. Scoring all five of its penalty kicks, the confident MI squad notched the title, 3-2, and advances to state.

Mercer Island High School’s girls tennis team continues to tear up the court this season by notching the 3A KingCo tournament championship on May 10. The Islanders, who won the 3A/4A KingCo Crest Division regular-season championship, received a second consecutive first-place finish at the tourney from the Garton sisters’ doubles team of senior Rachel and sophomore Sarah.
Eight Mercer Island City Council candidates submit filing papers

Two current Mercer Island City Councilmembers have put their hats in the ring for re-election. The general election will take place on Nov. 4 and a primary will occur on Aug. 5. During the week of May 5-9, councilmembers Ted Weinberg (Position No. 4) and Lisa Anderl (Position No. 6) filed their declaration of candidacy with King County Elections. Weinberg is running unopposed while Anderl will face off with Johana Beresky and Ted Yackulic (a primary will take place first).
