MARTINSBURG — Last weekend, golf returned to Martinsburg with the opening of Van Metre 9 at Stonebridge. A soft opening was held Saturday and the pro shop officially opened Sunday, offering players the chance to play at the historic location for the first time in 13 years. In preparation of opening day, a total of 38 people were invited to play the course Saturday for the soft opening of the course. With temperatures soaring, many players stopped the course after playing nine holes of golf.

MARTINSBURG — After a lengthy period of roundtable meetings, public comment and revisions, the Berkeley County Commission voted unanimously to approve the adoption of the amended Berkeley County Subdivision and Land Development Ordinance during a regular meeting Thursday. “It’s been a process to get this going through,” President Jim Whitacre said. At the meeting, there were no members of the public who addressed the commission.

MARTINSBURG — On Thursday afternoon, the Berkeley County 250th Commemoration Steering Committee held a special dedication ceremony of the historic mural, “Roots and Horizons,” at Sunfire Energy Solutions along the Frog Hollow Trail. The dedication was led by Matt Umstead, steering committee chair, along with mural artist Lea Craigie. “If you look at these murals, what you see is what our community is,” Umstead said.

In addition, several members who have been instrumental in the past year of service were recognized following dinner service. Each year, the club operates with a specific theme.

MARTINSBURG — At the beginning of June, MerelyCreative owner Meredith Bailey found the inspiration to begin a new community project that will bring some creativity to the Frog Hollow Trail in downtown Martinsburg. According to Bailey, she was inspired to create a rock snake along the walking trail after seeing similar projects on the popular website Pinterest. Rocky the Rock Snake is a creative creature that relies of the creativity of those in the community. “I just stumbled upon it,” she said.

MARTINSBURG — Early Sunday morning, Wheeling resident Jennifer Reuther was selected by a panel of judges to begin her year of service as she changed titles from Miss Tri-State Area to Miss West Virginia 2024. Over the next 12 months, she will work to elevate her community service initiative (CSI) Wellness Across West Virginia and represent the Miss West Virginia Organization (MWVO) on the national stage at the Miss America competition for 2025.

MARTINSBURG — Following a three-day competition for the title of Miss West Virginia’s Teen at Airborne Event Center, judges from the Miss West Virginia Organization (MWVO) selected Miss Morgantown’s Teen Demi Breeden to represent the Mountain State for 2024. Although she was competing as Miss Morgantown’s Teen, Breeden is a Jefferson County resident from Summit Point. She currently attends Washington High School. Throughout the competition, Breeden competed as part of the Service group.

MARTINSBURG — On Thursday, 30 young women from throughout the state traveled to the Airborne Event Center to begin competing for the title of Miss West Virginia and Miss West Virginia’s Teen for 2024. This year’s host, Miss America 2020 Camille Schrier, arrived on the stage after a group performance to “Vogue” by Madonna by the contestants. She was joined on stage by Miss West Virginia’s Teen Allison Dodson and Miss West Virginia Karrington Childress.

MARTINSBURG — For the 2024 Miss West Virginia/Miss West Virginia’s Teen competition, the Miss West Virginia Organization (MWVO) announced that Miss America 2020 Camille Schrier was available to host this year’s events, which kicked off Thursday and will conclude Saturday night at the Airborne Event Center in Martinsburg. Just last week, Schrier moved from Richmond, Virginia, where she was living while attending VCU’s School of Pharmacology, back to her hometown of Newtown, Pennsylvania.
