The Journal

The Journal is a daily newspaper located in Martinsburg, West Virginia, catering to the residents of Berkeley, Jefferson, and Morgan counties in the Eastern Panhandle region. It is part of the Ogden Newspapers group. Originally launched as The Evening Journal in 1907 by Harry F. Byrd, who would later become a U.S. Senator and governor of Virginia, the paper was sold in 1912 to his associate Max von Schlegell. In 1923, it changed ownership again, this time to H.C. Ogden. Over the years, the newspaper has undergone several name changes: it became The Martinsburg West Va. Evening Journal in 1913, then The Martinsburg Journal in 1920. It reverted to The Evening Journal in 1978, switched to The Morning Journal in 1990, and finally adopted its current title, The Journal, in 1993.

It's where my husband proposed to me, and it's where we return to again and again with our son. Last weekend, we enjoyed the birds and played in the garden, weeding, mulching and identifying the green sprouts emerging for the season. Two early bachelor's buttons had already bloomed after reseeding from last summer.

MARTINSBURG – For almost a year now, Jeanette Jones' food pantry, Planting Many Seeds, has been serving Martinsburg’s community. On Saturday, the organization is hoping to help even more families with a food giveaway. Since she started the food pantry last year out of a space in The Hub Suites on Queen Street in Martinsburg, it's started serving students at North Middle School, in a similar way to the Backpack Program but also working to provide food for the students' families back home.

Among the lesser-known holes in the Constitution cut by the Patriot Act of 2001 was the destruction of the “wall” between federal law enforcement and federal spies. The wall was erected in the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act of 1978, which statutorily limited all federal domestic spying to that which was authorized by the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court. The wall was intended to prevent law enforcement from accessing and using data gathered by America’s domestic spying agencies.

SHENANDOAH JUNCTION — In its two games against Jefferson during the regular season, Washington’s softball team managed just two runs in a pair of losses. During Thursday’s Class AAAA, Region II, Section 2 tournament game, the Patriots managed to match that total by the fourth inning and eventually doubled up that number in a 4-1 victory over the top-seeded Cougars.
