Last month, it was my paternal grandmother’s 105th birthday. It’s unlikely that we’ll have many more chances to visit her, so my husband, daughters and I visited the Philippines to celebrate – my first trip since February 2020. I’ve made the journey at least a dozen times, and it always feels like I’m visiting another version of me only accessible in these islands.

NOTE: I received this comment on the story you’re about to read: “I think your article just summarized the concept of reproductive justice, which is a feminist framework created by Black feminists in the 1990s, if I’m not mistaken.” After falling down a Google rabbit hole, I can attest that the commenter is not mistaken! It reminds me that any time I think I have a “new” take on feminism, there is probably at least one Black woman who said it first. And said it better. And said it decades ago.

We attempted this 10 years ago, after our first child was born, but abandoned the project amid sleep deprivation and the overwhelm of new responsibilities. Now that we are the parents of two no-longer-little kids, and more accustomed to the many losses and logistics of adulthood, we decided it was time to see it through.
