ELY—The Ely Winter Festival is on—thanks to a little assistance from Mother Nature (finally) and some helpers around town. Festival Coordinator Shauna Vega and organizers were a bit concerned about the annual celebration’s fate with this season’s initial lack of snow. After all, a highlight of the festival is the international Snow Sculpting Symposium, where professional snow carvers from near and far transform huge blocks of snow into frozen works of art.

Rock Ridge School Board considers student representation

EVELETH/VIRGINIA—The Rock Ridge School Board is set to get a bit bigger. The board at Monday’s regular meeting discussed adding two student members, as soon as at the Jan. 22 meeting. Rock Ridge School Board Clerk Brandi Lautigar and Alternate Clerk Lisa Westby interviewed four students and have recommended two, a junior and a senior, whom they did not name, to take on the role for the remainder of this school year, Lautigar said.
