Ab meinem siebten Lebensjahr flog ich als Minderjährige in Begleitung zu meinem Großvater nach Transsilvanien. Im Jahr 2024 erlitt er im Alter von 96 Jahren einen leichten Schlaganfall – also packten mein Freund und ich unsere Sachen, um in seiner Nähe zu sein. Jeden Morgen laufe ich zehn Minuten zu seinem Haus hinüber, damit wir zusammen spazieren gehen können. Ich habe meine Sommerferien als Kind die meiste Zeit in Transsilvanien, Rumänien, verbracht.

When I was a kid, I'd look out of the back window on rainy car journeys and silently race the raindrops. I'd pit two against one another, watching them streak down the glass, only for them to smack into each other and become a single stream. That's how my life feels right now. Two different directions I could've taken – the West my parents chose and the Eastern Europe they left behind – have merged into one runaway blob. I've moved to Romania.

A week after I got laid off from my staff job as a news editor, I sent out my first newsletter. I must confess that my initial email dispatch wasn’t sent on Substack, but only because it didn’t exist back then. When I started my newsletter, I’d been an editor at an online magazine but I didn’t have much of a public profile—a few hundred Twitter followers, no book, nor podcast. What I did have was a desire to leave editing behind and become a full-time writer.

Hi friends,We’re still in January and I hope the last few days are gentle for you and yours. It was a little warmer this week and I enjoyed the feeling of walking around with my coat unzipped. noticing the sun set after 5 pm, and getting a haircut. There’s nothing better than walking around after a haircut, taking selfies and feeling like an extra bouncy version of yourself. As we close out this month, I’ve noticed that it’s felt quieter than usual, which has been unusual but nice.

Two years ago, Jamal Jordon, a former reporter at the New York Times, tweeted that journalism school should include a course on how to freelance in the inevitable event of being laid off. I’ve never forgotten that tweet. I thought of it this April when I was made redundant from my job at a newspaper. Suddenly I was thrown into the freelance life, where you’re pitching for your bread and butter, and I had no choice but to learn how to do it.

Hi hi,I’m writing from somewhere above the Atlantic near Greenland—I’m putting that in flight wifi to work and catching up on life, which includes making grocery lists for a crowd, curating restaurant recs, and reading several Jenna Lyons profiles (here and here). Before today, I hadn’t looked at a laptop in days which felt so good! I was nervous to take PTO but my team was so supportive and the time difference helped me unplug.
