1 INTRODUCTION Socio-economic disadvantage is a key driver of food insecurity and health inequities, which are increasingly seen in Australia and globally (McKay et al., 2019; Pollard et al., 2018). These disparities are heightened in people living with disadvantage including but not limited to individuals experiencing or at risk of homelessness (Stafford & Wood, 2017).

Just as the first few daffodils were bursting open, the beginning of March was heralded, as always, by St David’s Day – a day dedicated to the patron saint of Wales. For members of the Welsh community, it’s a day of parades, concerts and celebrations of Welsh culture, with many a daffodil or leek pinned to lapels. Later this month, it’s the turn of the Irish, with St Patrick’s Day on 17th March providing the perfect opportunity for a knees-up at a shamrock-bedecked pub, pint of Guiness in hand.

As the last few bars of ‘Uptown Girl’ faded into silence on my walking commute to a lecture last week, a Spotify advert blared through my headphones, asking me if I needed to cut down on alcohol. The change in topics felt like whiplash, and their publicity strategy worked wonders, as it certainly gave me pause for thought.

As a first-year English Literature student, the start of my 2024 was heralded by an announcement on Blackboard, not of good tidings for the New Year but instead the summative deadlines for two of my modules.

It’s official – January is over and out – and from the longest month we’ve dived headlong into the shortest month. February, for many brands, can mean only one thing: Valentine’s Day. Like it or lump it, a day dedicated to showing the love for your partner or those dearest to you has become increasingly commercialised over the years.

Ah, January. Here we go again. What with Christmas feeling “so last year”, temperatures plummeting and summative season picking up speed, it’s hardly surprising that January is renowned for being the most depressing month of the year. It isn’t helped by the pressure to reinvent yourself at the start of a new year, with glossy lifestyle influencers encouraging you to pick out your supposed “flaws” and rectify them with a cocktail of gym memberships, salads and hardcore budgeting.

With Christmas fast approaching, festive songs and charity appeals are once again bursting onto the scene in the hopes of canvassing the season’s goodwill. However, the growing post-colonial dialogue in society casts a different light on these charitable ventures, and the concept of white saviourism has sparked much debate and invoked calls to ‘decolonise’ aid.

This weekend saw the return of the biennial Lumiere Festival in Durham – a spectacular showcase of lightshows and artwork across the city which injected a new lease of life into some dark November evenings. However, Durham Cathedral wasn’t the only thing illuminated by this event – Lumiere has thrown light on the current state of streetlighting in Durham, something which leaves many students quite literally in the dark.

The start of November can mean only one thing – the emergence of stubble on the upper lip, destined for a moustache that even Hercule Poirot would be proud of by the end of the month. That’s right, Movember has come around again: a charitable campaign funding projects around the world to improve men’s health, from mental health problems to prostate cancer.
