At least 12 high schools gathered at the Michael J. Petrides Education Complex in Sunnyside for the District 31 High School Memorial Day Ceremony.

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — Staten Islander Michael Mulgrew has won his sixth term as president of the United Federation of Teachers, the city’s largest teachers union. Mulgrew, the Unity Caucus candidate, received 54% of the votes counted, while competitors Amy Arundell, of the ABC Caucus, won 32% of the vote, and Olivia Swisher, of the ARISE Caucus, won 14%. The union announced the results on Saturday, and Mulgrew will once again serve for another three years as president.

Members of the New York State Police are warning the public about a new scam that involves phone calls attempting to get personal information. As part of an ongoing phone spoofing fraud, scammers are impersonating members of law enforcement or government agencies in an attempt to solicit sensitive personal information from individuals across the state and beyond. Individuals have reported receiving phone calls from numbers that appear to be legitimate New York State Police phone lines.

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — Two new science exhibits have been unveiled at the Borough President’s Hall of Science at the Michael J. Petrides School in Sunnyside. Borough President Vito Fossella, city Department of Education Chief School Operations Officer Kevin Moran, and Petrides Principal Anthony Tabbitas unveiled the new exhibits on Thursday. Fossella introduced the exhibits, which his office funded — an interactive hot air balloon and an air rocket launch platform.
