The administration of the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD) shut down a pro-Palestinian student exhibition held on campus last week. The exhibition, To Every Orange Tree, was organised by the school’s chapter of Students for Justice in Palestine (RISD SJP) and Carr Haus Café, a student-run café that is accessible to the public. The show, which opened on 17 March, featured the work of over 20 artists, including both current students and alumni.

Amid a ballooning deficit that could approach $10m by June, the Brooklyn Museum plans to lay off 47 staff members. The news was first reported by Hyperallergic and The New York Times on 7 February. The museum’s director Anne Pasternak informed staff via email that the museum was “experiencing strong headwinds: inflation has dramatically impacted our operating budget, adding millions of dollars to everyday costs and outpacing funding”.

Following public outcry last week, the National Cryptologic Museum in Annapolis Junction, Maryland acknowledge that it had made a “mistake” in covering several plaques and images honouring women and people of colour. More than 20 artists taking part in the New Contemporaries exhibition at London’s Institute of Contemporary Arts (ICA) staged a walkout at the show preview on 14 January in support of pro-Palestine demonstrators gathered at the venue. The ICA, however, has described the protest as “misguided” and based on misinformation. The pro-Palestine supporters called on the ICA to cut ties with Bloomberg Philanthropies, the sponsor of the New Contemporaries exhibition (15 January-23 March).

The union behind strikes planned at three London museums this week says it has launched legal claims against the external contractor Wilson James. Security guards at the Science Museum, the Victoria and Albert Museum and the Natural History Museum say they will take strike action from 17 to 20 January in protest over “stagnant pay”. According to the United Voices of the World (UVW) union, about 100 of its members work as security guards at the three museums. All are employed by Wilson James.

Security workers at the Seattle Museum of Art (SAM) ended their 11-day strike strike last week, with an overwhelming majority (98%) of unionized employees voting to ratify their first contract with the museum. The strike, which began on 29 November, involved between 60 and 70 full- and part-time workers unionised as the SAM Visitor Service Officer (VSO) Union. The new contract took effect immediately, resulting in base wages rising from $21.68 to $24.18.
