May 2, 2024 On the morning of April 25, about 30 student protesters set up on tarps in Centennial Common, linked arms and began chanting pro-Palestinian slogans. What started as a small group of demonstrators quickly escalated into a two-day-long encampment, joining similar Gaza solidarity encampments at colleges across the country. A group of around 11 Northeastern students, many of whom were arrested Saturday morning at the Gaza solidarity encampment on Centennial Common, held a press conference Monday morning outside of Boston Municipal Court in Roxbury. The conference was held following the 9 a.m. arraignment of Kyler Shinkle-Stolar, a fifth-year biology major who was the first individual arrested at the encampment on Thursday.

Several Northeastern students on campus Saturday afternoon criticized a university statement following the sweep of a Gaza solidarity encampment which announced the campus had been “fully secured” and that “all campus operations have returned to normal.” “Admissions tours are taking place … and graduating students are on campus posing for photos with their families,” the statement, which was posted to the university’s social media accounts Saturday at 12:38 p.m., said.
