A central Minnesota deputy and a motorcyclist collided when the deputy made a U-turn in his patrol car Thursday evening, officials said. A Minnesota State Patrol crash report detailed the crash, but did not identify the driver as a law enforcement agent. A Facebook post from the Crow Wing County Sheriff's Office confirmed the deputy's involvement. The collision happened just south of Brainerd on County Road 45 near Cook Road around 7:15 p.m., according to the Minnesota State Patrol.

Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz and two other Democratic leaders have been called to appear before a U.S. House committee to testify about their states' sanctuary policies for undocumented immigrants. Republican Kentucky Rep. James Comer, chairman of the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform, issued a call on social media to Walz, Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker and New York Gov. Kathy Hochul on Thursday. Comer wants the governors to testify on May 15.

A man accused of sexual assault escaped from an eastern Minnesota jail early Thursday, but is back in custody, authorities said. The 46-year-old man escaped from the Chisago County Jail around 1:30 a.m. during trash duty, the county sheriff's office said, and was being supervised at the time. Authorities found him about a mile from the jail around 3:10 a.m., took him into custody and returned him to the jail, the sheriff's office said.

Minnesota's plan to combat an invasive pest is canceled after federal funding fell through, the state said. The Minnesota Department of Agriculture planned to apply an insecticide called Btk to 12 areas throughout the state to fight the spongy moth, whose voracious appetite is devastating to forests. But the department said it did not receive the necessary federal funds in time.

Authorities are asking for the public's help to find a Twin Cities woman who has been missing for nearly three months. Jean Baynham, 65, was last seen near Zane Avenue North and Oak Grove Parkway in Brooklyn Park on Jan. 15, according to an alert from the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension. Officials describe Baynham as white, 5 feet, 7 inches tall and 114 pounds, with gray hair and blue eyes. "Jean has mental health issues that could affect her decision-making abilities," the BCA said.
