Byram Middle School evacuated after second gas leak in two weeks

BYRAM, Miss. (WLBT) - Byram Middle School has been evacuated again, after a second natural gas leak was reported there in two weeks. According to Byram Fire Chief Harry Horton, the leak occurred around 11:07 a.m. and was found near a natural gas meter at the rear of the building. Atmos Energy is already on the scene. Horton says the leak was caused by a faulty valve at the meter.

JACKSON, Miss. (WLBT) - An outspoken critic and former employee of JXN Water is now a deputy director of Jackson’s Public Works Department. Documents reviewed by WLBT show that Tariq Abdul-Tawwab was named deputy director over administration for the department back in March. Mayor Chokwe Antar Lumumba says someone's political opinions should not bar them from employment. The position comes with a salary of just under $70,000 a year. It’s unclear if the deputy position is protected by civil service.

Traffic stop leads to arrest on stolen firearm charge

GLUCKSTADT, Miss. (WLBT) - A man was arrested on a stolen gun charge Sunday following a traffic stop in Gluckstadt. Gluckstadt Police reported on social media that they pulled over a driver just north of the Gluckstadt Road exit on I-55 for careless driving and improper equipment. During the stop, a stolen firearm was found. The passenger, Kaleb Kohl Washington, was arrested for possession. The gun was out of Jackson.
