As the temperatures begin to rise and spring approaches, the Holdrege track and field team is gearing up for another exciting season of competition. The Dusters will see 10 of its 15 2024 state qualifiers returning to the roster this season. Returning to lead the program once again is head coach Jason Hale, who has been at the helm for 17 years.

McCOOK – After placing in the top 10 as a team at the 2023 State Cross Country Championships, the McCook girls will aim to finish at the top again this season. The Lady Bison had a strong 2023 season, finishing in the top five at the Southwest Conference meet and bringing home the runner-up title at C-5 Districts. Junior Emma Cappel returns this season after bringing home the ninth-place medal from state last year.

MINDEN – Rob Jonak was able to achieve his dreams with assistance from the Kearney County Economic Development Agency. Jonak has worked in the information technology in- dustry since 1995, and he received his degree in computers in 2014 from Central Community College. When his friend, Steve Shearer of Minden, was looking to retire from his computer repair business, SGS Innovations, he asked Jonak if he’d be interested in taking it over. Jonak soon jumped on board with the idea.

WILCOX – Preparing for the Kearney County Fair is a family affair for the Thorell and Steuhm families. Extended family members pitch in throughout the year to help the siblings and cousins with their multiple 4-H projects. Bristol, Barrett, Marley and McCoy Thorell, the children of Joe and Laurel Thorell of Axtell, participate in a variety of activities including Favorite Food Fair, sewing projects, art projects, woodworking, bucket calf and market steers.

AXTELL – Jon Lammers fell in love with showing pigs before he could even show them himself. His family has raised pigs for generations, and his three older sisters showed 4-H pigs each year. When Jon turned 8, he got his turn in the ring, and his passion blossomed into a business. Jon, the son of Kendall and Susan Lammers of Axtell, will be a junior at Axtell Public Schools and is a member of Keene Kids 4-H Club.
