CROMBERG, Calif. — The Plumas County Sheriff's Office announced the discovery of badly decomposed human remains in a remote area northeast of Cromberg. The remains were reported on the morning of May 9, 2025, by a private logging company, according to the sheriff's office. Upon arrival, investigators confirmed the remains were human. However, due to the advanced stage of decomposition, positive identification is not currently possible.

Carhart said the initial fire began around 2:30 p.m. when the vehicle veered off the road. Shortly after, another fire was reported about 100 yards away on the east side of Highway 99.
