BUTTE COUNTY, Calif. — A 17-year-old was sentenced to three years in juvenile hall for the drunken killing of Robert Etta, 50, during an emotional hearing in Butte County Juvenile Court. The incident occurred last December when the teen stole Etta's truck from his Magalia driveway. Etta attempted to stop the theft by jumping into the back of the truck, but the juvenile sped away and crashed, resulting in Etta's death. Etta's friends and family attended the sentencing.

EUREKA, Calif. — The Humboldt County District Attorney's Office announced the conclusion of its investigation into the officer-involved shooting of Kevin Jeffrey Burks, 32, which occurred on April 25, 2024, on Fern Street in Eureka. The DA explained that 75-year-old Phyllis Coy was meeting with her sister and a friend at her home when Burks, a stranger, approached acting strangely. He later returned with a handgun and shot Coy twice, in the chest and elbow.

PALERMO, Calif. — More than 1,400 customers in Palermo were left without power Thursday night due to an unplanned outage, according to Pacific Gas and Electric Company (PG&E). The outage, affecting 1,436 customers, was reported to PG&E at 4:00 p.m. PDT. The company estimated that power would be restored by 9:00 p.m. PDT. PG&E said their team is evaluating the electrical system to identify damaged sections and make necessary repairs in order to safely turn the power back on.
