Arizona officials utilized a naturally-occurring wildfire to reduce excess vegetation and mitigate future fire risks. The Basin Fire, ignited by lightning, was managed to burn more than 9,000 acres across two national forests. Fire crews created buffer zones and used firing operations to control the fire's spread. This controlled burn aimed to improve forest health and reduce the risk of catastrophic wildfires later in the year. Some wildfires are disasters, while others are opportunities.
