The Disaster Management Team in the Msunduzi Municipality in Pietermaritzburg says it’s still assessing the extent of the damage that heavy rains and a storm caused in the area on Thursday night. Scores of residents were displaced after their homes were flooded. The municipality has confirmed that over seven wards were affected. The municipality has not reacted to allegations that a lack of maintenance of storm water drains led to the flooding of roads.

Several learners from Sinamuva Primary School in Imbali outside Pietermaritzburg have been rushed to a local clinic following a suspected food poisoning incident. According to reports, the learners fell ill after eating chips and snacks. KwaZulu-Natal Education Department spokesperson Muzi Mahlambi says district officials have been dispatched to the school to conduct a thorough investigation.
