    City efforts to reduce crime at the downtown Cincinnati transit center appear to be working. New data from the Cincinnati Police Department shows violent crime in and around Government Square is down 50% compared to this time last year. Young people tend to congregate at transit centers as they take Metro buses home from school. A few violent assaults near Government Square in early 2024 sparked public concern about youth violence.

    Cincinnati City Council is poised to grant a 12-year property tax abatement to a planned boutique hotel Downtown. The building on West Fourth has been vacant for more than a decade. The 44-room hotel also will have 1,200 square feet of commercial retail space on the first floor. The total project will cost nearly $17 million. It’s been awarded state historic tax credits and the developer is also applying for federal historic tax credits.

    Researchers from the University of Notre Dame are studying homelessness prevention efforts in Cincinnati. The university’s Lab for Economic Opportunities works with service providers to evaluate poverty interventions. "We believe that the social service community contains the innovations that will help us figure out how to solve poverty," said Fran Gallagher, assistant director of project development. "But we also believe that evidence needs to be part of that solution.

    Crews have filled nearly 6,000 potholes in Cincinnati since the beginning of March, according to a Wednesday report from City Manager Sheryl Long. "Recent rainstorms and fluctuating temperatures have resulted in the reopening of temporary road patch fixes," Long said.

    An affordable housing project in Walnut Hills will be a hundred units smaller than originally planned after community pushback. A few City Council members say the project was better before the changes. Kingsley Development plans to add 180 units across two buildings on what’s currently an empty wooded lot at 2846 May Street. One-, two-, and three-bedroom apartments will be included.
