ORONO, Maine (WABI) - The Orono Red Riots are coming into Saturday’s Class C State Outdoor Track & Field Championships at Messalonskee with plenty of momentum. The boys and girls teams won the Penobscot Valley Conference title before returning to this weekend’s state competition. The girls are defending state champs, while the boys placed second last season. “I feel pretty good. I think we surprised some people at PVC’s. I think that we’ve worked hard all season. Everything’s culminated to this point.

HERMON, Maine (WABI) - Three Hermon Hawks signed with the Husson Eagles to join spring sports at the college level. Max Hopkins will be on the Eagles baseball team, while Olivia Johnston and Braelynn Wilcox are on their way to the Husson softball program. “Just getting to play the game that I’ve loved for so many years further than high school, not many people get to experience that, so I’m just excited to keep it going,” said Hopkins. “You get to continue doing what you worked hard for.

WATERVILLE, Maine (WABI) - Thomas sophomore Emma Burr finished in sixth place in the heptathlon at the NCAA Division III Outdoor Track & Field Championships last month. Burr landed in the top 20 as a freshman and made the podium and first team All-American in her second college season. “Coming from a small school, I feel very helpful to growing the program and getting a lot of attention out there for MCI and for Thomas. Being able to be an athlete, I am very proud of that,” said Burr.

ORONO, Maine (WABI) - The 5th Annual Courageous Steps Project Scramble is teeing off on Mon. July 7 at 9 a.m. at Penobscot Valley Country Club in Orono. The proceeds help fund the project’s community programs. “Our annual golf scramble raises money and proceeds to give back to children here locally through different community programs that we operate on an annual basis, from early childhood intervention to scholarships we give out to graduating high school seniors.

BANGOR, Maine (WABI) - Newly-hired Husson athletic director Amanda Nelson has been placed on administrative leave on her second day on the job. Nelson is named as a defendant in a civil lawsuit in San Diego County stemming from a 2023 incident when she was the Del Norte High School athletic director.
