The University of Southampton hosted 50 A-level students from across the UK at the event, which is part of a nine-month programme called Ignite Your Journey. The programme, which was formerly known as Access to Southampton, supports young people from underrepresented or lower socioeconomic backgrounds to access higher education.

Today the Echo can reveal his departure amid the police watchdog serving him notice he is under new investigation into alleged gross misconduct.

Chief Constable, Scott Chilton (Image: Other) The police watchdog has now confirmed it is investigating former Hampshire chief constable Scott Chilton for two alleged undisclosed relationships with junior officers. As revealed by the Echo, Mr Chilton quit today after being told he was under investigation by the Independent Office for Police Conduct for gross misconduct.

2 1/1 CAMPAIGNERS have been "abandoned" after the county council withdrew its opposition to a quarry at Hamble Airfield. Pupils from The Hamble School and residents protested today outside of a public inquiry held in Winchester into the Cemex that had been rejected by Hampshire County Council. But in a shock move the authority has now said it "accepts that planning permission should be granted".
