ASBURY, Iowa — Joan Overhouse and her partner, Lyndal Anthony, are a complementary team. Anthony is an accomplished woodturner whose expertise at the lathe has led to hundreds of pieces and new woodturners who have learned under his tutelage. Some of the bowls and vases he creates are then given to Overhouse, who turns them into one-of-a-kind items using a sure hand and a creative eye. Overhouse is a pyrographer. In other words, she burns designs into wood. But these are not simple scorch marks.

LA MOTTE, Iowa — Kim Deppe’s art comes from the ground up. Her finished work can be seen at Maquoketa Farmers Market, Jackson County Fair and occasionally on display at Maquoketa Art Experience, but it all starts in the dirt. Every summer for the past decade, Deppe has grown gourds of all shapes, sizes, thicknesses and textures and turned them into works of art.

A new city park will soon materialize in a subdivision on Dubuque’s northwest side. At its meeting Monday, the Dubuque City Council approved an engineer’s concepts for Rustic Point Park, which will be located on Rustic Point Lane near the intersection with John F. Kennedy Road and Derby Grange Road.

DYERSVILLE, Iowa — Investigators announced Tuesday that they are suspending the investigation into a homicide that took place in Dyersville over 40 years ago. The Dubuque County Attorney’s Office, Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation and Dubuque County Sheriff’s Department say they will all suspend their investigations into the homicide of Charles Jaeger, who was found shot to death on his bed at 914 Second Ave. SE in Dyersville on Aug. 29, 1984.

Personnel spending for the city of Dubuque increased in 2024 as officials sought to boost wages for the police and fire departments. The city spent $49,262,841 on employee base wages in fiscal year 2024, which began July 1, 2023, and ended June 30, 2024. This marked a 9% increase in wage expenses from fiscal year 2023.
