For the first time this season No. 1 Mater Dei (Santa Ana, Calif.) was in a competitive game. The top-ranked Monarchs held off No. 7 St. John Bosco (Bellflower, Calif.) for a 31-24 to win their second straight CIF Southern Section Division 1 championship. It was the first game this season the Monarchs were within one score in the fourth quarter. Oregon-bound running back Jordon Davison carried the ball 29 times for a season-high 196 yards and three touchdowns.

The 2024 high school football season is winding down with huge playoff matchups coming up this week. The lone MaxPreps Top 25 matchup is going down in California as No. 1 Mater Dei (Santa Ana) faces No. 7 St. John Bosco (Bellflower) in the Southern Section Division 1 championship at Veterans Memorial Stadium in Long Beach. Mater Dei hammered St. John Bosco 59-14 back on Oct. 25, the worst loss for the Braves under head coach Jason Negro.

After another brutal loss to the Tampa Bay Lightning, all eyes are on General Manager Tom Fitzgerald and head coach Lindy Ruff. At the beginning of the season, many assumed the Devils were a lock to make the playoffs and even be a cup contender. Last season, the Devils set multiple franchise records and made it to the second round of the playoffs, beating their rivals, the New York Rangers, in the first round. After 58 games this season, the Devils are not even in a playoff position.
