THE National Gallery of Ireland is inviting entries from Limerick for the AIB Portrait Prize and Young Portrait Prize 2025 competitions. The AIB Portrait Prize highlights contemporary portraiture, welcoming entries from artists working in all media, both in Ireland and from Irish artists living abroad. The AIB Young Portrait Prize invites submissions from young artists aged 18 and under. The closing date for receipt of entries for both competitions is 10pm on Friday July 4, 2025.

ALL children in Limerick who are starting primary school in September are being invited to visit their local library to pick up a free book bag and take the opportunity to join the library. Since its launch, the My Little Library initiative has resulted in an average of 20,000 four to five-year-olds have joined their local libraries annually.

A TRIO of young Limerick entrepreneurs impressed judges at the Foróighe NFTE Youth Entrepreneur of the Year Awards. Kinga Tobianaka, Paulina Varuyeva, and Caitlin McMahon from Desmond College, Newcastle West, represented Limerick in the Best Business category with their SEA Tan Gone product, described as “a gentle, effective tan remover developed with natural ingredients and a focus on boosting confidence and ease of use”.

A TEACHER in Kilmallock is only delighted to announced that he and all his students have worms. It’s not something that’s usually a proud boast, but in this case the worms are the kind that live in a ‘worm nursery’ and are turning waste from the school and local businesses into highly nutritious compost. Brian Kelleher, EU Climate Pact Ambassador and teacher at ColáisteIósaef in Killmalock, has founded the Worm Academy as part of his climate action curriculum at the school.

THERE was serious fun and games at the University of Limerick Citizens’ Assembly, which saw over 100 Limerick people discuss research projects aimed at developing a more sustainable future for the region, each involving recreation. Having listened to nine project presentations, Limerick citizens voted for the top three, which each received €10,000 to make their idea happen.
