joined the growing ranks of California cities with their own local
sick leave and/or minimum wage requirements. West Hollywood enacted
an ordinance that created paid and unpaid time off mandates as well
as minimum wage obligations and mandates for the distribution of
service charges, which went into effect for most employers on July
1, 2022.

prohibit non-compete agreements in New York State are back to
square one following Governor Hochul's veto of an outright ban
in late December 2023.

Seyfarth Synopsis: Ever since the
New York State Legislature passed legislation to prohibit
non-compete clauses in employment contracts in June 2023, the bill
has languished awaiting Governor Hochul's signature. To allay
the concerns of a number of constituencies, including the financial
services industry, the State Senate is now considering a revised
version of the non-compete ban, which exempts certain "highly
compensated individuals" and partnership arrangements from its
scope.

What You Need to Know: On September 13, 2023, the California legislature passed S.B. 616, which expanded the State’s existing paid sick leave mandate, the Healthy Workplaces, Healthy Families Act of 2014, in significant ways. On October 4, 2023, Governor Gavin Newsom signed the bill into law. The law takes effect on January 1, 2024.

Seyfarth Synopsis: On September 13,
2023, the California legislature passed S.B. 616, which is expected
to significantly expand the State's existing paid sick leave
mandate by increasing the annual amount of paid sick leave from
three days or 24 hours to five days or 40 hours for eligible
employees, and raising the accrual cap from 48 hours to 80 hours. Unless Governor Newsom vetoes the bill (which is not expected), the
amendment will take effect on January 1, 2024.
