    By Beth CarrollThree years ago, Leyton Beba auditioned for Morristown Onstage, playing his guitar and singing. “I was so nervous that I immediately forgot all the lyrics,” he remembered. “Needless to say, I didn’t make it.”Those nerves were nowhere in sight on Tuesday night when he joined longtime emcee Tara Bernie at the Mayo Performing Arts Center as the first student co-host in the talent show’s 18-year history. Sixteen amateur acts competed in the fundraiser for the Morris School District.

The Westin Governor Morris Hotel on Monday hosted the 21st edition of this increasingly popular annual fundraiser. More than 35 local eateries set up booths and served samples to approximately 700 ticket holders at the sold-out event. Proceeds are earmarked for the Morris Educational Foundation, the Literacy Volunteers of Morris County, the Morristown Rotary Scholarship fund, and local food kitchens.

Every year, dozens of amateur artists audition, hoping to become one of 16 finalists chosen to compete for cash and glory at the Mayo Performing Arts Center in Morristown. And every year, there is quite a bit of variety to the acts. Singers, duets, bands, dancers, even standup comedians. They’ve all been there before.

They are among 16 amateur acts who will compete for cash prizes and bragging rights on Tuesday, May 4, 2025, at the Mayo Performing Arts Center, in a benefit for programs in the Morris School District. From the time she was a youngster in Miami, Monroe has taken dance lessons, acting lessons, and voice lessons, both opera and musical theater.

While she has always loved singing, the thought of performing in front of a sold-out crowd at the Mayo Performing Arts Center (MPAC) was daunting for someone who was only 10 years old. But she is a finalist again this year and, at 14, is more than ready for the challenge.
