The run up to the 68th Annual Monterey Jazz Festival has begun in earnest with the recent announcement of the festival’s artist lineup for the Sept. 26-28 event to be held at the Monterey Fair & Event Center. Just like it has since its inception in 1958. This Friday, three-day packages (both arena and grounds) go on sale to the general public and single-day tickets will be available starting May 8. To be notified of the times, sign up on the website at www.montereyjazz.org.

Fast becoming the art and music party of the year, the Monterey Museum of Art’s Third Annual Block Party takes place April 5, 11 a.m.-4 p.m., with an additional dance party later in the evening. The afternoon session is free and open to the public, and involves a music stage, art organization booths and artisans with wares to sell along Calle Principal bordering the backside of the Museum. The community is invited free of charge to experience the Museum’s current exhibitions on display.

Despite there being at least 11 different towns, the residents of the Monterey Peninsula are all one. While we tend to go about our business closer to home in our given towns, generally speaking there is nothing that would stop a music fan from driving anywhere in Monterey County, let alone the Peninsula, to hear a band of interest.

The performance room at Wave Street Studios is really picking up steam with independent music bookings from local bands looking to play outside of the bar scene. It’s probably the closest we have to the Kuumbwa Jazz Center in Santa Cruz. It took owner Rhett Allen Smith some time to establish his vision after he teamed with Louis Castellani to purchase the property and build the recording studio in 2002.

A theme is emerging in the series of concerts put on by SLV Presents at Wave Street Studios in Monterey: the discovery of artists who are veteran songwriters and touring musicians who have been living and performing in our midst but who have not yet become oversaturated in the local marketplace. Take the theme thing another step with the Valentine’s Day event titled “Songs of Love” featuring two married couples who are also married in music.
