Atlantic Beach business owners said this year’s crowd brought a noticeable boost compared to last year. Andrew Nicklow, manager of Amos Mosquito’s Restaurant, said Memorial Day marks the unofficial start of the busy season. “Memorial Day is kind of like the start of our season,” Nicklow said. “It’s like, ‘alright, summertime is really here.’”While Monday brought cloudy skies, cooler temperatures, and a light drizzle, the beach was nearly empty, but nearby shops and restaurants stayed full.

After sitting empty for more than a year, Martin County General Hospital could soon reopen its doors. ECU Health, which serves 29 counties across eastern North Carolina, submitted a nearly 400-page proposal to take over the facility. The health system outlined plans to reopen the hospital as the state’s first Rural Emergency Hospital (REH). Frustration grew in the Greystone neighborhood as neighbors said they’ve had enough of maintaining their crumbling roads on their own. Cracked pavement and deep potholes have made it hard to drive. Residents said cars have been damaged, and school buses won’t even enter the neighborhood anymore. With around 200 people living there, many said they feel stuck. “It’s miserable. It’s horrible,” said Michele Wurtzel, whose visiting the neighborhood.
