    Father’s Day can mean something different for everyone. In New Bern, one woman is using pottery to help those who feel the absence the most. Marsha Laird noticed a pattern in her studio on Pollock Street. “A lot of them won’t have fathers in the home, and we don’t replace that,” said Laird, owner of The Unbroken Potter. “But we just give them a place to be that’s safe and builds their self-esteem.”She turned her pottery studio into a place of outreach.

    People lined the streets in New Bern Saturday for the city’s Juneteenth parade. The event brought together families, local leaders, and community groups to celebrate freedom and history. Havana Suggs said she's lived in New Bern for around 80 years. She said she remembers having to enter through the back door at restaurants and businesses. Juneteenth marks the day enslaved people in Galveston, Texas finally learned they were free. This was two and a half years after the Emancipation Proclamation.

    Three years after a drunk driver nearly killed her, Brittany Cass supported a new bill in the North Carolina General Assembly. House Bill 789 aimed to stop repeat drunk driving offenses. The bill allowed first-time DWI offenders to install an ignition interlock device in their car. The device prevented the engine from starting if alcohol was detected. Cass survived a crash in Carteret County on January 4, 2022. She was driving home to New Bern from a church event in Morehead City.
