Fifty police employees have received a warning after an internal investigation found they had accessed the case file related to the death of a Nelson officer for no good reason. On January 1 this year, Senior Sergeant Lyn Fleming died after being struck by a car while out on foot patrol in the Buxton Square car park in central Nelson. Another officer was also seriously injured.

Firefighters are tackling a large silo blaze at a commercial premises in Brightwater, Tasman. A Fire and Emergency spokesperson said they were alerted to reports of a fire at about 5.20pm and sent two appliances from Richmond, two from Brightwater, and two from Wakefield to the scene. Tankers from Nelson and Motueka have been sent to assist. The spokesperson said the fire was believed to involve a hopper silo and the incident had been raised to a second alarm level.

A senior Fire and Emergency New Zealand (FENZ) employee is facing serious charges. The man, a veteran firefighter who Stuff has chosen not to identify for legal reasons, was arrested by Customs on Wednesday and is due to appear in a district court on Thursday. On Wednesday afternoon, a Customs spokesperson confirmed the man’s arrest, but said they were not in a position to provide further information until after his first court appearance. Stuff understands the man is facing serious charges.
