Police were justified in shooting at a man who killed two people at a construction site in Auckland, the police watchdog says. The gunman, Matu Tangi Matua Reid, who was 24, died during the shooting at a construction site on Queen Street in July 2023. Reid killed two colleagues, Wattle Downs resident Tupuga Sipiliano, 44, and Manurewa resident Solomona To'oto'o, 45, and injured a number of others.

Mitchell and Patrick James Moore were involved in a drug syndicate distributing cocaine, LSD, MDMA, and ketamine. Moore received a five-year, seven-month sentence for his role in the distribution network.

The country's second most powerful police officer remains on leave, four months after he was suspended pending a criminal investigation. Deputy Commissioner Jevon McSkimming is under investigation by the Independent Police Conduct Authority and the New Zealand Police. The nature of the allegations against him cannot be reported. A police spokesperson confirmed to RNZ on Monday there was no update regarding the investigation. On Monday, his lawyer told RNZ McSkimming had no comment. Do you know more?

More than 300 police officers were not assessed on their swimming abilities before graduating, a review has revealed. The recent recruits will now have to do the assessments retrospectively. It comes as Police Commissioner Richard Chambers has announced police will review the swimming training policy. On Wednesday, police confirmed 76 constables who graduated from Wing 383 and 73 from Wing 381 were unable to complete the test while at the college.
