How did the Chiefs fare in the NFL Draft? Were they winners or losers in the league's annual player-selection process? And who among this year's selections might emerge as an early contributor? Kansas City Star sports columnist Sam McDowell and Chiefs beat writer Jesse Newell break it all down with host Blair Kerkhoff in this week's edition of SportsBeat KC, The Star's sports podcast presented by Underdog. The Chiefs entered the 2025 draft with eight picks. After trades, they wound up making seven.

The Chiefs liked the prospects of their final pick in the NFL Draft so much they traded up to select him. And surrendered an extra pick in the process. SMU running back Brashard Smith was taken in the seventh-round, No. 228 overall, in a deal with the New England Patriots. The Chiefs gave up their final two slots in the seventh round, Nos. 251 and 257. Smith started his college career at Miami (Florida) as a wide receiver. He ended it in Dallas as one of the nation's most productive running backs.

It wasn't a good season for Utah State, but it wasn't Jalen Royals' fault. But Royals had 55 receptions in seven games before suffering a foot injury. He topped 100 yards four times and turned in a six-reception game against Southern California.

The Chiefs went with a power rushing defensive end with their first pick in the third round of the NFL Draft. Ashton Gillotte started three of his four years at Lousville and finished 2023 with 11 sacks, which ranked seventh in the nation. He was named All-ACC that year. Gillotte, listed at 6-foot-3, 264 pounds, collected 24 1/2 tackles for loss in his final two seasons with the Cardinals. The Chiefs had just taken a defensive tackle, Tennessee's Omarr Norman-Lott with the 63rd overall pick.
