Workers in three news production and advertising unions that have been on strike at the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette for two years and five months over a dispute over their health care coverage have voted to accept settlements that end their strike, their jobs and their union locals. Theirs is the longest-running strike in the country, and it still is ongoing, as their union siblings in the Newspaper Guild of Pittsburgh are continuing to strike for their legal rights.

When Starbucks workers invited friends over for some coffee and some good trouble Tuesday morning, plenty of Pittsburghers were happy to join them, including several striking Pittsburgh news workers. The region’s Starbucks workers have been great supporters of that strike, showing up at rallies and at picket lines at all hours of the day and night. So several striking Newspaper Guild of Pittsburgh workers were delighted to show their solidarity.

A panel of three Third Circuit Court of Appeals judges on Wednesday afternoon heard oral arguments about the National Labor Relations Board’s petition for an injunction that would end the Newspaper Guild of Pittsburgh’s strike at the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. The journalists have been on strike since Oct. 18, 2022, on unfair labor practice charges including that the company has bargained in bad faith on a new contract.

The number of work stoppages nationwide declined last year from the previous year, but the number continued to exceed 2021 levels. So says the Labor Action Tacker annual report released Wednesday by researchers at Cornell University School of Industrial and Labor Relations and University of Illinois School of Labor and Employment Relations, who’ve been documenting strikes and lockouts over the past very active four years.
