VENICE — The West Coast Inland Navigation District board approved the sale of surplus land to Sarasota County on April 4, then told its executive director to look into buying some property. The land being sold is a 3.5-acre parcel along the Intracoastal Waterway near the Bellagio subdivision on the island of Venice. The county will be buying it for $125,000. The city has expressed an interest in getting it from the county.

NOKOMIS — A Nokomis man arrested earlier in the month on four domestic violence-related charges is facing nine new charges for allegedly violating a court order not to contact the victim. Juan Andres Hernandez Lopez, 34, 300 block of Toscavilla Blvd., was arrested by Venice police on April 5 on charges of aggravated assault with intent to commit a felony, domestic battery by strangulation, false imprisonment, battery and possession of marijuana not more than 20 grams.

VENICE — Fox Cove, a proposed 70-unit, single-family attached housing development at the northeast corner of Auburn and Border roads, south of I-75, got bad news in its first step toward approval Tuesday. Citing concerns about density and stormwater drainage, the Planning Commission voted to recommend City Council denial of proposed comprehensive plan and zoning map amendments.
