It’s still a work in progress, but there’s a new kid – sort of – in town, in the effort to help more youth in northwest Minnesota and across North Dakota get involved in the outdoors. Based in East Grand Forks, MinnDak Youth Outdoors was officially formed in March and is in the process of applying for 501c3 status as a federally recognized nonprofit.

POLK COUNTY, Minn. – It’s a cold, frosty morning on the prairie, and like he has done so many spring mornings over the past five decades, Dan Svedarsky is out before dawn to witness a prairie rite of spring. On this particular morning, that would be sharp-tailed grouse, those prairie dancers known for their ornate mating displays, as males of the species gather on dancing grounds, called leks, in their annual quest to attract a female and propagate the species.

In addition to the Sharpie Shack, Dan Svedarsky has a prairie chicken blind – dubbed the “Taj Ma Chicken” – on a nearby booming ground. Glacial Ridge National Wildlife Refuge a few miles to the east offers two blinds, as well, refuge manager Gregg Knutsen said – one at a sharptail lek and one at a prairie chicken lek. There’s no charge to use any of the blinds, but reservations are required.

The department offered 960 elk licenses to hunters for this year's season, an increase of 127 from last year, the Game and Fish Department said in a news release. AdvertisementElk Unit E7 was created after discussions with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, landowners and hunters to manage a growing elk herd in and surrounding the J. Clark Salyer National Wildlife Refuge.
