Gilman home heavily damaged in fire

GILMAN, Wis. (WAOW) — A house fire broke out on Tuesday, April 29, 2025, in the Township of Cleveland. The Gilman Rural Fire Department responded to the scene on Mico Drive, finding smoke emitting from the attic. All residents were safely out of the building. Gilman Fire Chief Brian Welsh said the fire started near the chimney and caused extensive rafter damage.

ADAMS COUNTY, Wis. (WAOW) — The Adams County Sheriff's Office executed a search warrant on April 24, 2025, in the Town of Adams, uncovering a significant cache of illegal firearms parts. The operation was part of an investigation into the unlawful purchase and possession of fully-automatic firearms parts and accessories. The search revealed numerous illegal items, including 3-D printed handguns without serial numbers, parts for converting firearms to fully-automatic, and a 3-D printer.
One person dead in Waupaca County UTV crash

WAUPACA COUNTY, Wis. (WAOW) -- One person is dead after their UTV crashed early Sunday morning, according to the Waupaca County Sheriff's Office. In a release Sunday morning, they say the crash happened shortly after midnight on Mud Lake Road, north of Nitke Road. First responders found one male outside the UTV, unresponsive. They attempted life-saving measures, but eventually declared him dead.
WIAA approves Name, Image, Likeness amendment

STEVENS POINT, Wis. (WAOW) -- At the WIAA Annual Meeting in Stevens Point Friday, the membership voted to approve an amendment on Name, Image and Likeness. The approved Constitutional amendment will allow students to enter into NIL opportunities for activities not associated or identified with their school team, school, conference or the WIAA, and in accordance with other prohibited NIL activities, including language attempting to deter undue influence.
D.C. Everest hires new boys basketball coach

Jake Schalow will take over the program in the 2025-26 season. Schalow was the Fox Valley Association Player of the Year and earned First-Team All-State honors with Kaukauna during his high school playing career. He went on to play Division II college basketball at Bemidji State University, where was part of two conference championship teams and appeared in an NCAA tournament. He began his coaching career at the University of Minnesota - Duluth, serving as a Graduate Assistant Coach from 2014-16.
Connexus celebrates national volunteer week with event benefitting The Neighbor's Place

WESTON, Wis. (WAOW) -- More than 100 volunteers packed the ballroom at Dale's Weston Lanes Thursday to help out The Neighbor's Place. Connexus Credit Union held the event, packing hygiene kits, pantry essentials and potty-training kits for those in need. They spent about $20,000 to buy the supplies that were then packed by employees Thursday morning. For Connexus, it's an important way to give back to the community they serve. "Service and giving back to the community is really important to Connexus.

WAUSAU, Wis. (WAOW) -- The 4th Annual "We Step Into The Light" art exhibit was on display in Wausau today. The gallery, which was displayed at UW-Stevens Point at Wausau, featured art created by artists who teamed up with survivors of sexual assault. They called them the "muses" for the art pieces. It was hosted by the Women's Community. The pieces focus on the ambition, goals and passions of the thriver, rather than their assault. Leaders say it's a very meaningful process for those involved.
Grand Theater prepping to host open house touting Second Century campaign

WAUSAU, Wis. (WAOW) -- The Grand Theater will host an open house Tuesday to introduce their new Second Century campaign. The $17 million project will help upgrade and enhance the theater as it enters its second century of existence. "It's a beautiful theater, but it's time to enhance it and make a richer experience. It's going to address all the things that we need to help continue to bring the types of artists and shows that we love bringing to North Central Wisconsin.
