Members of a number of North Woods communities competed and placed quite high recently at the Wisconsin Horseshoe Pitchers Association (WHPA) State Singles Championships hosted at Marathon Park in Wausau. The WHPA is a nonprofit organization created solely for the promotion of organized horseshoe pitching in the State of Wisconsin. Blake Benzing was crowned champion of the Junior Boys Division, going a perfect 5-0 in the tourney.

The Wounded Warriors in Action Foundation (WWIA), a national 501(c)(3) foundation, will host its 10th annual Eagle River Muskie Chal-Lunge on the Eagle River Chain of Lakes this Thursday through Sunday, Sept. 26-29. Nine Purple Heart veterans from across the country will come to Eagle River for the event this year. The WWIA serves the nation’s combat-wounded Purple Heart recipients by providing them with world-class outdoor sporting activities.

U.S. Senator Tammy Baldwin has called on Postmaster General Louis DeJoy to immediately address costly delays Wisconsin newspapers that rely on the U.S. Postal Service (USPS) are experiencing, resulting in lost revenue, customer complaints and canceled subscriptions. According to News-Review Office Manager Mary Jo Adamovich, who has worked at the News-Review for 43 years, she has never seen this number of complaints come in as she has in recent years.
59th annual Beef-a-Rama™ hits Minocqua this weekend

The 59th annual celebration of everything bovine will take to the streets of downtown Minocqua this weekend as the Let’s Minocqua Visitors Bureau hosts Beef-a-Rama™, Friday and Saturday. According to Let’s Minocqua President and CEO Krystal Westfahl, the annual event will bring more than 20,000 people to the island city, with events kicking off Friday afternoon. “For some people, it’s the one event every year they simply will not miss,” said Westfahl.
Two ATV fatalities mar Labor Day weekend

A four-year-old in the town of Pelican, along with a 49-year-old in the town of Conover, were killed in separate ATV accidents over Labor Day weekend. The Vilas County 911 Communications Center received a call Saturday, Aug. 31, at 3:40 p.m. reporting an ATV accident in the 4000 block of Monheim Road in the town of Conover. The caller reported a female had been ejected from an ATV and was unconscious.
Lakeland Union locked down due to glitch in security system

A glitch in a new automated security system caused an active shooter lockdown of Lakeland Union High School in Minocqua Friday morning. In a release midday Friday, Minocqua Police Chief Dave Jaeger assured the public that the overwhelming response to the situation at the high school was very real at the moment, and he’s glad afterwards that it turned out to be a false alarm. “It goes without saying, but yes, we’re glad this was not a real ordeal,” said Jaeger.

The cooler nights and shorter days signal a close to the summer season, and with that so too begins a charge to the outdoors from hunters all around the state, as this weekend begins the annual archery whitetail deer season. Bow hunters across the state will be able to climb in the stand for the first time Saturday, Sept. 14, for the opening of archery and crossbow deer hunting season, open through season ends Jan. 5, 2025.
