Daiyon El-Amin was sentenced April 17 to life in prison after pleading guilty to murder in the 2021 shooting death of 17-year-old Alabama Christian Academy student Leiah Holmes. Holmes was a rising senior and cheerleader at ACA when El-Amin broke into her Delmar Drive home in Montgomery and shot her, Montgomery County District Attorney Azzie Oliver said. Holmes and El-Amin had briefly dated, Oliver said.

A former Alabama Law Enforcement Agency worker has been arrested and charged with four counts of Dissemination of Child Pornography after lawmakers were sent letters containing pornographic pictures, an ALEA spokesman said. John Watson, 54, of Dothan has been arrested and booked into the Houston County Jail with no bond, ALEA spokesman Jeremy Burkett said. Watson was a driver license examiner with ALEA's Driver License Division.
