There's a tendency in the public at-large, and frankly, in the media business, also, to paint villains more vividly by painting saints beside them. Bad guys just don't look as bad if there's not a hero nearby for contrast. Tennessee football's divorce from quarterback Nico Iamaleava has generated just such a scenario after the Vols' talented passer reportedly tried to leverage a good-but-not-great season in his first year as a starter into an NIL raise from $2+ million a year to $4 million.

It was buried pretty deep, but not unnoticeably so. A footnote of a remark embedded beneath the cascade of questions fielded by Alabama football coach Kalen DeBoer about the quarterback position on Monday. One that won't end up triggering message board hysteria or being snipped for a Youtube short. But one that spoke directly to a critical factor in the Crimson Tide's 2025 season: much-needed improvement at the right tackle position. Specifically, Tuscaloosa native Wilkin Formby's position.

Former Alabama football defensive coordinator Bill "Brother" Oliver has died, according to a University spokesperson. Oliver, who was 85, played for Alabama's 1961 national championship team under legendary coach Paul W. "Bear" Bryant before moving on to a coaching career that spanned 33 years. A native of Epes, Ala., not far from the Alabama-Mississippi state line, Oliver joined Bryant's staff in 1971, and went on to win three national championships as an assistant coach.

The days of major college football programs carrying four scholarship quarterbacks might not be dead, but they're dying fast, and it doesn't sound like they'll survive under new Alabama football coach Kalen DeBoer, either. Traditionally, coaches have tended to sign one in every signing class and maintain four at any given time. But with the NCAA transfer portal making it highly difficult to keep fourth-stringers around at that position, three is the new four. "I think that's probably fair.

Alabama's A-Day event was a practice instead of a traditional scrimmage, disappointing many fans. Attendance was estimated at 10,000-15,000, the lowest in decades. Fans cited the lack of game-like atmosphere and excitement as reasons for their dissatisfaction. If the Alabama football fans who sat on the west side of Bryant-Denny Stadium were enthralled with Saturday's A-Day practice, sorry I never made it over there.
