TROY, Ill. – Triad girls soccer head coach Matt Betlach had a tough decision to make with 2:58 left in a scoreless tie against Althoff Catholic Monday evening. After a quick passing sequence inside Althoff’s 18-yard box, Alina Ayran was brought down by Izzy Border, and the center referee immediately blew his whistle and pointed to the penalty spot. Ayran, Triad’s second leading scorer, wanted to take the kick. During this time, Triad’s Sophia Bohnak was being attended to for an injury.

ALTON – Things didn’t start well for the Alton High School baseball team Thursday afternoon. The Redbirds hosted Southwestern Conference rivals O’Fallon, and it was the Panthers who struck early. Literally, as early as possible. Dane Hrasky sent the game’s opening pitch over the left-field wall for his first home run of the season. Carson Bauer and Connor Blue followed that up with back-to-back singles before Camden Cox hit an RBI single to score Bauer, advancing Blue to third.

GLEN CARBON – If anyone had asked Father McGivney girls soccer head coach Matthew McVicar if his team would open the season at 9-0, he would have told them no. “No, honestly, I don’t think we would have,” he said Tuesday night after a 4-1 win over conference rivals Marquette Catholic. “Of course, we’ll take it. We still have work to do.”“You look at the schedule and circle the ones that you know are going to be tough, and you know you want to win, and Marquette is one of them.

ALTON – The Alton High baseball team started the season off hot, jumping out to a 6-1 record. They then traveled down to Alabama to face some tough tournament competition and lost three straight. The Redbirds got back into the winning column on Monday when they hosted and beat the Roxana Shells by a score of 2-0. “Yeah, Alabama was not very good to us,” Alton head coach Scott Harper said. “It was a long drive, for some not very good baseball that we played.
