For 12 years UCLA waited to return to Omaha and the Men’s College World Series. They waited 15 total hours to play the fourth inning of their game with Louisiana State. Now, the Bruins will have wait several months to play again. UCLA fell behind in the first inning for the second time on Tuesday and couldn’t complete an improbable comeback. The Bruins’ season ended at Charles Schwab Field in a 7-3 loss to Arkansas. Starting pitcher Cody Delvecchio showed rust in his first appearance since March 28.

UCLA waited 15 hours to bat in the fourth inning of its winner’s bracket game of the Men’s College World Series against LSU. Now, the Bruins have five hours to regroup or else their season is over. An early lead disappeared once LSU came to bat in the first inning. Those bats stayed hot through a strong thunderstorm that delayed the fourth inning until Tuesday’s morning, lifting the Tigers to a 9-5 win at Charles Schwab Field.

The Bruins’ winner’s bracket game against LSU on Monday night was postponed until Tuesday at 8 a.m. PDT following a three-hour rain delay — it will resume in the top of the fourth inning with UCLA batting and LSU leading 5-3. The remainder of the game is scheduled to air on ESPN. It allows UCLA to regroup after a promising start fell apart.

UCLA’s return to the Men’s College World Series started with three hours of sweaty palms in 86-degree heat and high humidity. An early lead shrunk across four innings on a muggy afternoon. Only when closer Easton Hawk struck out Murray State’s Dominic Decker on a full count for the final out could the Bruins exhale. They walked off Charles Schwab Field for the first time in 12 years with a 6-4 win Saturday. The Bruins jumped ahead early but couldn’t build momentum.

The warm wind was blowing into Charles Schwab Field and UCLA freshman Wylan Moss threw a changeup. Dean West knew he could make a play on that pitch. Sure enough, Murray State’s Dominic Decker sent a liner to shallow left. West got a jump on it and anticipated. With the wind knocking the ball down, the sophomore outfielder dove and extended his glove. He slid across the manicured outfield grass and held up his glove to show Omaha he stranded two runners and ended the rally.
