After two weeks of evidence, the jury at Joesef Barraza's murder trial began deliberations late Monday morning after hearing closing arguments. One side called Carly Schaaf's death a murder. The other contends her death may have been an accidental overdose or suicide. The 23-year-old Lincoln woman's body was found at Pawnee Lake three weeks after she was reported missing in 2021. The Nebraska Supreme Court on Friday affirmed the conviction and sentence for Felipe Gonzalez Vazquez, who as a 17-year-old fatally shot a Lincoln police officer during an escape attempt in 2020. "We conclude that all of Vazquez’s assignments of error lack merit and that his claims of ineffective assistance of trial counsel either lack merit, were not raised with sufficient specificity, or cannot be resolved on direct appeal," Justice Stephanie Stacy wrote in an 81-page decision.

She said the guy she'd known from high school and a fast-food job who she sometimes smoked weed and meth with brought her and a girlfriend rum-mixed drinks from the kitchen that afternoon, Aug. 30, 2020. She woke up naked two days later.
