Beaver, WV (WOAY)- A former corrections officer at the Southern Regional Jail (SRJ) has been sentenced in connection with the death of an inmate. 25-year-old Steven Nicholas Wimmer of Bluefield will serve nine years in federal prison, followed by three years of supervised release, for his role in the 2022 assault and death of Quantez Burks. Wimmer admitted to taking part in a violent incident that occurred after Burks reportedly tried to push past another officer.

The gamified trail is accessible through the Brews and Booze Trail digital passport and encourages travelers and locals to visit the craft breweries, wineries, and distilleries of Southern West Virginia. The trail features ten participating businesses that you may already be familiar with, such as Greenbrier Valley Brewing Company and Smooth Ambler, which will offer special deals to passport holders.

Greenbrier County, WV (WOAY)- The Greenbrier County Sheriff’s Office is ruling the death of a Crichton man who had been missing since November as a homicide. According to an official press release from the Sheriff’s office, on Saturday, May 6, after receiving an anonymous tip, Sergeant S. Murphy and Trooper H. Ware of the West Virginia State Police responded to a wooded rough terrain area of Nicholas County.

West Virginia (WOAY)- The Dollar General Literacy Foundation (DGLF) awarded over $65,000 in literacy grants today to non-profit organizations, libraries, and schools across the mountain state. A few organizations within our viewing area will benefit from these grants. The Fayette County Family Resource Network, the Fayette County Public Library, and the Richwood Public Library received $3,000 in grant funds each.

Beckley, WV (WOAY)- The Beckley Police Department (BPD) is now accepting applications for its annual junior police academy. There will be two sessions, one from June 23-26 and another from July 7-10 The program is open to 11-14-year-olds enrolled at Beckley Stratton and Park Middle Schools in 6th, 7th, or 8th grade. 5th graders enrolled in any feeder elementary schools may also apply. Shady, Indy, or Trap Hill Middle School students are also encouraged to apply.
